Thanks for the reply, I never knew this. I have two 75s (.223 Hunter + 6.5x55 SS), and specifically sought them out in preference to the 85 or other rifles as I just really like the feel of them, in addition to their great reputation. But finding out that the safety actually blocks the firing pin and not just the trigger is a very pleasant and unexpected surprise. It obviously doesn't negate the need for all the proper safety precautions when handling one, but it's fantastic to find out it's there even so. I also have two 75's. I bought the first one in.308 about ten years ago and having used a couple of 85's regularly I went out of my way to find a second 75 (which I've just had rebarrelled from.243 to 6.5 Creedmoor) because the build quality and finish was simply better in the 75. As a happy aside in the 75, the recoil lug is easier to bed properly (if you feel the need).
Perhaps the best testament I can give is that during the rebarrel of the.243, I checked to see if the action needed blueprinting and the tolerances were extraordinarily good. Both of my 75's are the deluxe model and I think that they must have been hand finished whereas the 85's are quite angular and feel much more like a mass-produced rifle. Like all rifles, of course, it doesn't matter which rifle model you choose if it hasn't been looked after. In my opinion, there was nothing wrong with the 75. It is the epitome of the factory rifle and there was no reason not to let it run in production seemingly in perpetuity in a similar fashion to the Remington 700.

I would agree that the magazine design in the 75 is a non-issue. There is nothing wrong with it.
It would seem that the accountants were given too wide an involvement in the design process of the 85 which is the same problem with the new Tikkas compared with the old. I believe the design changes in both the Sako and Tikka ranges were not about offering an improved product but all about improving profit margins and the shooters lost out. Give me a 75 any day of the week. Kind regards, Tim. The only thing I preferred on the 85 compared to the 75 was that they had a smoother bolt. The 75 stainless models were a bit sticky.
I traded my 75 for a 85 when they came out. Both were stainless synthetic in 6.5x55. The 75 was probably the most accurate stalking rifle I ever seen.
I shot many 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards and I shot a few 1 inch groups with it at 300 as well. The 85 was not as good. I had to change the stock on it to get it to shoot. It was good enough after that but still not as good as the 75 that I traded.
