The modern BlackBerry is a great example of a finely tuned communications device but recent developments by RIM's main competitors have seen the brand lose ground in the market. But the latest version of the company's smartphone, BlackBerry, aims to change that. To see just how far this new and improved OS has come we're holding it up against its predecessor, OS 6.
Web BlackBerry OS 7 boasts a new and highly improved Web browser which aims to rival those found in and iOS devices as well previous versions of BlackBerry OS, and its fairly safe to say that this latest iteration delivers. Packing a new engine, support for Flash, HTML5, enhanced gesture support and speedier HTML rendering, BlackBerry OS 7 finally brings RIM's brand into line with the rest of the market. In fact, it arguably takes the platform past those of Google and Apple! BlackBerry OS 6 is no shrinking violet when it comes to browsing the marvels of the World Wide Web though, and its upgraded WebKit empowered browser allowed a world of 'Berry users to breathe a sigh of relief when it was released. With features that include tabbed browsing and pinch to zoom (if you're a touchscreen user) you can enjoy your web experience with your OS6 powered device.
That said it's easy to see where the improvements have been made, and OS 7 makes previous versions look positively Neanderthal. Winner - BlackBerry OS 7 Aesthetic BlackBerry OS 6 doesn't stray far from RIM's visual master plan and while the UI is super functional it isn't exactly stunning to look at. You're treated to the usual minimalist icon set, which is nice, but it can't hold a candle to other smartphone offerings.
Also the lack of any discernible widgets makes OS 6 feel rather dated. Version 7 of the BlackBerry OS comes with an altogether more promising feature: the catchily named Liquid Graphics interface, which the manufacturer promises will deliver a higher standard of eye-candy across the board. What that equates to in real life isn't clear yet, but we expect to see some solid improvements overall if RIM intend to keep up with the proverbial Joneses. It's a fair shout that most users don't put their tick beside the BlackBerry box because they want luscious good looks though, and when it comes to functionality both OS 6 and OS 7 are second to none.
Winner - BlackBerry OS 7 Applications As you'd expect there isn't a mountain of difference between versions of the OS in terms of app support, for now at least. 
When the new, OS 7 devices hit the market you can expect to see a good deal of use made of the upgraded hardware on offer, which is likely to include some inventive use of the device's in-built NFC functionality.
We're also looking forward to seeing how the new upgraded GPU's are implemented (wouldn't it be nice to be able to play some decent games while you're enjoying your downtime?) For now though, BlackBerry OS 6 & 7 are deadlocked when it comes to apps. You can get a varied selection of both paid and free titles, catering for most commonly used tasks and services. In the past the focus has been heavily centred on the enterprise user but more titles aimed at non-business folk are finding their way in to the BlackBerry App World every day, and we expect the trend to continue as the platform matures. Winner - Draw Functionality BlackBerry OS 6 is a busy person's dream. The OS is organised into simple categories which allows the user to get where they need to go quickly, and simple pop-up and context menus mean you can accomplish most tasks in seconds. The organiser is, as you'd expect from a platform with enterprise roots, second to none and we're sure you're already aware of how good the Email functionality is (for the uninitiated: It's exceptional!). OS 6 saw the introduction of the Universal Search function too, which has carried over into BlackBerry OS 7 with really pleasing results, and the new version of the platform also moves forward in other areas, such as the new BlackBerry Balance inclusion, which allows users to divide their work and private life more easily on their device.
